About Us

Welcome to Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids – come on in!

Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids is a vibrant free emotional health support community of children, adults, families and friends on any kind of cancer journey or those grieving a death due to any cause.

Our comprehensive program meets you where you are, when you need us, with a variety of social and emotional support options for you to choose from. Whether it be education opportunities with local experts and others who have traveled similar paths, support groups with structured sharing times, social activities or our weekly Facebook lives with varying subjects from nutrition and advance care planning to children’s books and conversation starting activities.

We help ensure no one has to navigate cancer or grief on their own.

People gather together to learn, share their experiences, and true to our namesake Gilda Radner, have a few laughs along the way. Our support groups are facilitated by master’s level professionals with specialized programming and age appropriate opportunities for youth.

Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids is part of Cancer Support Community (CSC), a global non-profit network of 50 locally owned and operated 501c(3) affiliates, 100 satellite locations and online providing the highest quality emotional and social support.

CSC’s vision is that everyone impacted by cancer receives the support they want and need throughout their experience.

CSC’s mission is to uplift and strengthen people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care.

Locally, Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids also embraces a mission that provides emotional health support for anyone on a grief journey of any kind.

Learn more about our story

Founded with love by cancer survivors, we officially opened the doors of Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids on February 15, 2001. However, the grassroots movement to bring a Gilda’s Club to our community began in the spring of 1996 by local philanthropist Twink Frey.  As a cancer survivor, she knew personally the lack of social and emotional support resources available to her when she was going through her diagnosis, treatment and life altering “after effects.”  She was joined by two other local cancer survivors – Deb Bailey and Susan Smith – and together, these three women set about the task of founding Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids.
